The Halcyon Tower; certain doom!

Halcyon

Myth/Science ~ GREEK/ASTRONOMY ~ From the Greek, Alcyone, it means "Queen Who Wards Off Storms." Alcyone was one of the demi-goddesses who eventually became one of the Pleiades (the seven daughters of Atlas and Pleione). She was most commonly considered to be the daughter of Æolus (Son of Hellen and God of Wind) and Enarete. She married King Ceyx of Thessaly and with him was the mother of a son called Eosphorus ("Bringer of Dawn"). After Ceyx died, Alcyone threw herself into the sea. The gods changed them both into the halcyon birds. As said above, Alcyone is in the open cluster of Pleiades and the brightest star of the group. Alcyone is 1400 times more luminous than our sun. It is a blue star with a +2.85 magnitude. The star’s scientific name is ETA/25 Tauri and is located in the constellation Taurus. Alcyone is about 400-450 light-years from Earth. It is known as Al Jauz "the Walnut," Al Jauzah or Al Wasat "the Central One," and Al Na'ir "the Bright One" in Arabic. Learn More: Wikipedia: Alcyone (star), The Pleiades: Information, and Wikipedia: Kingfisher (Halcyon bird).
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Built by Farrow-Marshall and located in Seattle, the Halcyon Tower is Baal’s Deus Ex Machina. Baal designed the tower as a bomb; the superstructure is made from Naquadah. Baal detonated it, however, SG-1 was able to use the Prometheus’ transporter to beam it into space where it exploded. A cover story of a gas explosion was fabricated (907 -- Ex Deus Machina).

The surface of Halla covered by Replicator blocks Fifth with the time-dilation device

Halla

Myth ~ ANCIENT NORSE ~ Possibly named for Valhalla.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Halla was the first planet settled by the Asgard, and was originally an important planet in their federation. After studying Reese, the Asgard High Council (members include Thor and Freyr) decided that Halla should be the place to try to trap the Replicators (See Nemesis). The Asgard found a command within Reese that recalls all the Replicators to her. They amplified this signal and broadcast it through space. Once this was done they left a device on Halla which dilates time (slows down by a factor of 10 to the 4th power [One hour inside the bubble equals more than a year outside]). The "time bubble" around Halla reaches a field radius of .16 light years. All the Replicators gathered on Halla, and before the device activated, they had a chance to study Reese and created "First," a being similar to Reese. Being made of smaller blocks, he was able to get inside the device and stop it. Because of First’s tampering, the "time bubble" around Halla is passing 100 times faster than normal space-time. When SG-1 lands in the Prometheus, they discover that the surface is completely covered with Replicator blocks. SG-1 repairs the time-dilation device and escapes, leaving all of the Replicators trapped (612 – Unnatural Selection). Halla is destroyed when the Asgard made the sun around Halla collapse into a black hole in an effort to kill the Replicators (801/802 – New Order).

Hanno

Hanno

History ~ ANCIENT CARTHAGE (modern Tunis, Tunisia; Northern Coast of Africa) ~ (Fifth Century BC) A navigator who explored the West Coast of Africa. Wrote the book Periplus (translation of Greek, "Voyage"). (Late Third Century BC) Hanno the Great, was a politician. He became famous as a general in the First Punic War against Rome.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Hanno, a member of the Bysra race that lives on Chartago, accuses Teal’c of killing his father, while Teal’c was the First Prime of Apophis (115 – Cor-ai).

Harsiesis baby Shifu, all grown up

Harsiesis

Myth ~ ANCIENT EGYPT ~ Called Hor-Sa-Iset (Trans: "Horus Son of Isis"); Harsiesis is his Greek name. He is the son of the son of Isis and Osiris and was born after Seth killed Osiris. He is a form of the god Horus, as a child being protected by his mother, Isis, and is thought of as a guardian deity. According to the Pyramid Texts, (See Book of the Dead) the Harsiesis performed the "opening of the mouth" during the mummification rituals. He is usually depicted as a child sitting on Isis’ lap with a finger up to his mouth. The Golden Dawn attributed Silence to him, seemingly because the sucking of the finger is suggestive of the common "shhh" gesture.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ The Harsiesis is a child born to the hosts of Goa’ulds. They contain all the knowledge of the Goa’uld race and the penalty of producing one is death. This one in particular, is the child of Amonet and Apophis. Sha-re tells Daniel that the Harsiesis is on the planet Kheb (310 – Forever In A Day). The Harsiesis is protected by a being called Oma Desala, who took him through the gate to an unknown destination (320 – Maternal Instinct). Shifu is the name that Oma Desala has given to the Harsiesis. In Chinese, it translates to, "Master Workers." I have not yet found information to back up the meaning as "Light." There is a name of African origin (Swahili, to be exact) that is similar to Shifu, which is Sefu, meaning "sword" (417 – Absolute Power).

Hathor

Hathor

Myth ~ ANCIENT EGYPT ~ The Goddess of Alcohol, Beauty, Dancing, Foreign Lands, Love, Motherhood, and Music (a.k.a ~ The Goddess of Sex, Drugs, and Rock-N-Roll). Her Egyptian names include: Athyr, Het-Hert ("The House Above"), and Het-Heru ("The House of Horus"); with Hathor being a mistake in Greek transcribing of Athyr. She is the daughter of Nut and Ra. In early Egyptian mythology, she was the mother of Horus, but was later replaced by Isis. Hathor then became a guardian of Horus. With Ra, she is the mother of Anhur. She is depicted as a woman with a cow head and a crown of a sun disk cradled by cow horns. Other times she was shown as a regular woman with the ears of a cow. In one myth, Ra became upset with the actions of humans and sent his Eye in Hathor’s war-like form (Sakhmet) to destroy all of humanity. She was compared to the Greek goddess Aphrodite, the Babylonian goddess Ishtar, and Ceres from Rome. Learn More: Ancient Egypt: the Mythology – Hathor.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ A Goa’uld who was banished to Earth by Ra, her husband. She was found in a Sarcophagus in the Temple of Inscriptions (113 – Hathor, 222 – Out Of Mind). She was killed in a struggle with Colonel Jack O’Neill (301 – Into The Fire).

The Hebridans: Liam Pender, Tanis Reynard, and Aden Corso

Hebridan

Geography ~ GREAT BRITAIN ~ The Hebrides are a group of islands off Scotland’s west coast. They can be divided into two groups: the Inner Hebrides (The islands of Skye, Mull, Islay, Jura and the Small Isles) and the Outer Hebrides (The islands of Lewis, Harris, North Uist, South Uist and St. Kilda). The Outer Hebrides are also known as the Western Isles. Learn More: VisitHebrides.com, Hebrides.com - Award winning photographs, and Virtual Hebrides.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ The home planet of the crew of the Sebrus. Aden Corso, Tanis Reynard, and Liam Pender are human natives of this planet (See Vancouver). The Serrakin (Warrick is a member) are the true native race of this planet. They helped to liberate the Hebridans from the Goa’uld thousands of years ago. Jonas theorizes that because of the Celtic writing on the Sebrus that they may have originated from the Hebrides Islands off the Scottish coast (618 – Forsaken). For 59 years they have had a race through out their solar system called the Loop of Kon Garat (708 – Space Race). They fell to the Ori (1007 - Counterstrike).

Hebron

Hebron

History/Geography ~ LEVANT (Israel/Palestine) ~ Hebron is located on the West Bank and is called Al-Khalil in modern Arabic. It is one of Judaism’s four holy cities, and also a sacred place for Muslims. According to the Bible, Numbers 13:22, Hebron was founded "seven years before Zoan in Egypt." Zoan (later called Tanis) was the capital of the Hyksos invaders and has been dated to the 18th century BC. It is first mentioned in the Bible in connection with Abraham, who buried his wife Sarah there in the Cave of the Patriarchs (now enclosed by the Mosque of Ibrahim). King David also ruled there for seven years before moving his capital to Jerusalem. "In modern times, it was part of mandated Palestine during 1923-48; after the Arab-Israeli War of 1948-49, it was in the territory annexed by Jordan (1950); since the Six-Day War of June 1967, it has been part of the West Bank (Judaea and Samaria) territory under Israeli administration (Encyclopedia Britannica)." To see pictures go here: Holy Land and to learn more visit: Encyclopedia of the Orient: Hebron. (Also, Paravel is from the Chronicles of Narnia by the British author C.S. Lewis. Cair Paravel is the castle in the capital of Narnia.)
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Hebron of Paravel volunteered to be a Tok-ra host for Tanith. The Goa’uld had once ruled his home planet (404 – Crossroads).

Heimdall

Heimdall

Myth ~ ANCIENT NORSE ~ ("World Tree") Also called the "White God," Gullintani ("Gold Tooth"), and Heimdalr; he is the Watchman of the Gods, although he may have originally been an omniscient Sky God. His hall is called Himinbjorg and his horse is named Gulltop. He was born on the edge of the earth to nine Giant Maidens, who are said to be ocean waves. His duty is to guard the Bifrost (rainbow bridge that links the Asgard plain with Midgard) from giants. He has exceptional hearing and sight. Stories relate that he could hear wool and grass growing and could see over one hundred miles away. He disguised himself as the mortal, Rig (“King”) and became the father of the three social classes of mankind. During this time, he visited three different homes in Midgard and fathered three sons: handsome Jarl for the nobles, sturdy Karl for the free-peasants, and ill-favored Thrall for the slaves. At the beginning of Ragnarok, he will sound Gjall ("Ringing Horn"), his curved herald’s horn and will battle Loki, his enemy. During this battle, Heimdall kills Loki, but he too will die from his wounds.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ He is an Asgard scientist located on an unnamed distant planet in Earth’s galaxy in a secret underground lab. Freyr comes to the SGC to ask SG-1 to rescue Heimdall from the Goa’uld who have located the lab. Heimdall also reveals that Thor is not dead as Freyr reported, but had been taken captive by Osiris and must be rescued before Anubis arrives. Heimdall's research is vital to the future of the Asgard race because the Asgard have not been able to reproduce for centuries (522 – Revelations). Due to their incurable degeneration disease, he dies in the mass suicide of the Asgard explosion of Orilla (1020 – Unending).

Captain Helia of the Tria

Helia

Myth ~ ANCIENT GREECE ~ ("Sunny," from helios, "Sun") Helia was one of the Heliades, "Daughters of the Sun." Her parents were Helios, the Sun-God (See Sol), and Clymene ("Famous Might"). In one version, Helia had four sisters: Aetheria, Dioxippe, Merope, and Phoebe (in another version there were only three: Aegiale, Aegle, and Aetheria). There were also two brothers: Helias (sometimes said to be one of the Heliades) and Phaeton (who died trying to drive the sun chariot). After Phaeton died, the Heliades grieved for four months. The Gods turned their tears into amber, and turned them into poplar trees. Their amber tears were said to fall into the River Eridanos (Phaeton drowned here). The stories say the sisters were either changed into the stars of the southern constellation Eridanos or into poplar trees. (Helia is also an alternate name for Hel, Norse Goddess of the Underworld)
The Show (Stargate Atlåntis) ~ Captain Helia is the commander of the Tria. While testing the McKay/Carter Intergalactic Gate Bridge, McKay detects the ship traveling .999 the speed of light. There are 100 Ancients aboard. The Althosians believe the return of the ship is foretold and signals a turn in the war against the Wraith. Captain Helia took control of Atlantis and sent the Earthlings home and the Athosians to another planet. The Asurans attack the city. Presumably killed by the Asurans (310 – The Return).

The fortress that contains the Codex

Heliopolis

History/Geography/Myth ~ ANCIENT EGYPT ~ Heliopolis (Greek: Helio = Sun + Polis = City. Hence: City of the Sun) Called "Annu," "Iunu," or "Onu" by the Ancient Egyptians. Located northeast of modern Cairo, near the first split of the Nile River delta. It was the first known site of a Sun Temple, which was dedicated to the worship of Ra. There was a college and a library there. Today, the only remnant of the city is the obelisk of Senwosret I. To learn more visit: LookLex: Heliopolis/On.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ The planet P3X-972 (also called "PB2-098" & "Ernest’s Planet") Ernest called it Heliopolis. It was a meeting place for the Four Great Races (Ancients, Asgard, Furlings, and Nox); a so-called "Alien United Nations." A room in the castle there contained the Codex [See: Tantalus] (110 – The Torment of Tantalus).

Cranky yet loveable; with Dr. Novak

Hermiod (Hermod)

Myth ~ ANCIENT NORSE ~ Possibly named for Hermód, the Messenger of the Gods. From the Old Norse word, Hermóðr, it translates to "Courage-Battle." He is sometimes said to be the son of Odin, however the text of the Codex Regius refers to him as "Odin’s boy" alluding that he is Odin’s servant. Odin and Frigg sent Hermod the Brave to the Underworld (Niflheim and Helgardh) after Balder (their son) was murdered. Hermod is sent because he is the only one brave enough to face Hel (Goddess of the Underworld). Once there, he meets with Hel and begs her (for three nights) to release Balder. Hel agreed to release Balder only if all living things weep for him. Hermod told the other Gods of Hel's request and to prove that he had actually been to the underworld, he presents Odin with Draupnir, Odin’s ring that he had burned on Balder’s funeral pyre. The Aesir agree to Hel's terms. However, one did not weep for Balder. It was Thokk, a giant-witch (who was actually Loki in disguise), saying that Balder had never done anything for her. Thus, Balder stayed in the realm of the dead until Ragnarok. Hermod was also said to have carried out great deeds and was the most renowned traveler. May be related to the mortal hero Heremod. Similar to Hermes of Greek myth.
The Show (Stargate Atlåntis) ~ Hermiod is the Asgard crewmember of the Daedalus. He is cranky because he has to abuse the Asgard technology in the fight against the Wraith. He is helping with the Asgard technology that is integrated into the ship (201 – The Siege). He modifies the hyperdrive of the Daedalus to reach Atlantis in time to relay the message of the bomb. He doesn’t like Kavanagh. He later transports Col. Caldwell to Atlantis. He will try to use the Asgard beaming technology to remove the Goa’uld from Col. Caldwell (213 – Critical Mass). Due to their incurable degeneration disease, he dies in the mass suicide of the Asgard explosion of Orilla (1020 – Unending).

Heru-ur

Heru-ur

Myth ~ ANCIENT EGYPT ~ Also called Har’wer and later Haroeris in the Greek era. Heru-ur translates to "Horus the Elder." Horus is the son of Isis and Osiris, but Horus the Elder is said to be Osiris, Isis, Nephthys, and Seth’s brother (also said to be the twin-brother of Seth). He was one of the Egyptian Sky Gods and the God of Goodness and Light. He was also the God of Revenge, in which, Horus reaches maturity and avenges his father’s death. He and Seth were embroiled in a great battle, in which Heru-ur defeated Seth and became the first ruler of the united Upper and Lower Egypt. He is depicted as a man with a hawk/falcon head with his eyes being the sun and the moon. Additionally, the Pharaohs were believed to be the physical embodiment of him. Heru-ur was also worshiped as a son of Ra in Kom Ombo (see Nagada). To learn about the temple at Kom Ombo go here: The temple at Kom Ombo.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ He is the most ruthless of the Goa’uld System Lords. He is the son of Ra and Hathor, and the enemy of Apophis. He controls the Horus-guards (109 – Thor’s Hammer, 206 – Thor’s Chariot). Deceased; his mother-ship was destroyed in the Tobin System when he was making an alliance with Apophis (414 – The Serpent’s Venom). Heru-ur controlled Juna (P3X-729) until SG-1 led a rebellion and defeated his Jaffa forces. After some time, Cronus arrived by ship and took control of the planet (421 – Double Jeopardy). According to a few rare ancient texts, he is the creator of the people of P3X-744 (Tegrea/Tagrea); however only a few dare to believe in him. Tarek Solomon tells Teal’c and Jonas that the legends say that Horus spoke them into existence. Teal’c says that after whatever resources Heru-ur sought had been exhausted on Tegrea, he abandoned them 300 years ago; ending their "dark-age" (620 – Memento).

Hieroglyphs

History ~ ANCIENT EGYPT ~ From the Greek, "ta hieroglyphica," which translates to "the sacred letters," it is the form of writing (their language is called Middle Egyptian) used by the Ancient Egyptians. The hieroglyphic alphabet contains 23 characters that are phonograms (representing a single sound), but the characters can also represent what the character is or an idea (Ideogram). For example, to the left, the feather can mean the letter "I" or "E" (Phonogram). It can also represent an actual feather (what it is) or Ma’at, the idea of truth, justice, and order. It is not known how to correctly pronounce or spell (in English) because they did not use vowels the way we do, and the words are spelled phonetically. So if your name is Sarah, like me, to translate it into hieroglyphs, you would spell it "sera." For further information try: NOVA Online/Pyramids/Hot Science: Say What?, and Neferchichi’s Tomb: Writing with Hieroglyphs. ~ There is no developed script in the Pre-Dynastic Era (Dynasty 0). There were only crude pictograms. Recently discovered in Abydos by German archaeologist Gunter Dreyer, the earliest examples of a developed writing system was from the reign of King Horus-Scorpion (or Scorpion I) of Dynasty 0. This would predate the earliest form of writing found in Mesopotamia (cuneiform) by 200 years. The tags have been carbon-dated to between 3300 BC and 3200 BC (Sumerian cuneiform dates to 3000 BC). The pictograms were found in Scorpion’s tomb and are carved on tags, about the size of postage stamps and made from bone or ivory. The tags, numbering approximately 150, are thought to have been a way to categorize the taxes by what city they came from. Many of the tags have a symbol representing a plant (thought to mean the “plantation” of origin) and an animal (thought to mean the "prince" of origin). However, when the two symbols are combined are spoken with their phonetic values, city names, such as Abydos, can be read. The movie (StarGate © 1994) ~ Daniel corrects translation of the cover-stone hieroglyphs. They are also mentioned occasionally in the show. For the translation of the cover-stones from the movie, go here: Digging Up The StarGate: Coverstones.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Tarek Solomon shows Jonas and Teal’c (See Jaffa) the artifacts of Heru-ur and the papyrus he found in Anhur, the desert of the north. Jonas says the writing (which is extremely developed) on the papyrus is a "slight variation of pre-dynastic Egyptian" (620 – Memento).

Heru-ur and his Horus Guards

Horus the Younger

Myth ~ ANCIENT EGYPT ~ His Egyptian name is Hôr or Har, and translates to "High, Above" (Horus is the Greek version). Horus has approximately 20 different names and forms, including Heru-ur, and Harsiesis. He is the son of Osiris and Isis. He was one of the most important deities of Egypt. He was the God of the Sky, Kingship, and Light and was best known for fighting Seth and banishing him to the desert, to avenge the death of Osiris. He is depicted as a man with a hawk/falcon head. His eyes were the sun and the moon. During a battle with Seth, Horus’ left eye (the moon) was injured (this is one explanation the lunar eclipses) and was healed by Thoth. The healed eye became the "wedjat" (powerful symbol and amulet). His center of worship was centered at Abydos and had a temple at Heliopolis, as well as many other cities in Egypt.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) and the movie (StarGate © 1994) ~ In the movie, the Horus were the boy attendants of Ra. When they were grown, they became the Horus-Guards, Ra’s soldiers and bodyguards, the champion became Anubis. In the show, the Horus-Guards are the lackies of Heru-ur. Their functions are to be bodyguards and Jaffa. (The Serpent-guards serve the same function for Apophis.)
